On Halloween of this year, the sign “Home Halloween” caught people's eyes in Shibuya. How about you?  Did you spend in your home on Halloween?

 On October 30, our ESS members had a Halloween party differently this year. We usually make Jack-o'-Lantern. However, we have to take measures to protect our members from the covid-19, so we decided not to do it. Instead, we thought about having fun activities we could do. 

First, we learned the origin of Halloween by watching some interesting videos in the CALL room. I will introduce something interesting we have learned. The video showed us the origin of “Trick or Treating” is an European custom. This is called “ Souling ”. On November 2 , Christians visited houses one after another to calm down the souls of the dead. People treated these Christians to “Soul cake”. However, if there was no soul cake, the souls of the dead would play a prank on the houses without being calmed down. You can guess, right? Soul cake turned into snacks. 

 Then, we visited some teachers offices and did “Trick or Treating”. The ESS members could enjoy the event more after learning the origin of “Trick or Treating”. Also, thanks to cooperation by a lot of teachers, we had such a great time! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers for their cooperation.

 I wish Halloween of this year was a happy day for everyone.

ESS同好会のハロウィーン！

ESS同好会でハロウィーンイベントを催しました！

今年のハロウィンは渋谷で「お家ハロウィン」の看板が人々の注目を集めました。みなさんはどうでしたか？　今年のハロウィンは家で過ごされましたか？

　10月３０日、私達ESS同好会は例年とは違うハロウィンパーティーをしました。毎年私たちは「ジャックオーランタン」を作っています（ご興味がある方は過去の記事もご覧ください）。しかし、今年は新型コロナウイルスの影響で密を避けるために中止としました。その代わりに面白い動画を見てハロウィンの起源を学んだり、「トリックオアトリートinツマタマ」を行いました。私たちが学んだ面白い事実を皆さんにご紹介します。

　その動画によると「トリックオアトリート」の起源はヨーロッパの習慣にあるのだそうです。「ソウリング」と呼ばれるもので、１１月２日にキリスト教徒達が死者の魂を鎮めるため人々の家々を次々に回ります。その際に訪れたキリスト教徒達に「ソウルケーキ」が振舞われるのです。しかし、もしも「ソウルケーキ」を出さなかったら、死者の魂は鎮められることなく、その家にいたずらをするのだそうです。皆さんもうお分かりですよね？　「ソウルケーキ」がお菓子に変わったようです。「トリックオアトリート」をする前にこのことを学んだので、より楽しむことができました。さらに多くの先生方のご協力により私たちはより一層楽しむことが出来ました。この場を借りて改めて全ての先生方に感謝申し上げます。

　みなさんにとってハロウィンが幸せあふれる日であったことを願って…。
