ごきげんよう。私は中学3年生の春休みに学校外のエージェントを通して1ヶ月間のマレーシア留学に行ってきました。最初私にとってマレーシアとはアジアの一国という認識しかありませんでした。しかし実際に行ってみて印象が大きく変化したので私の学校生活や日常生活を交えて紹介したいと思います。

Hello. I went to Malaysia during spring vacation, through an agent. At first, I only thought of Malaysia as just another country in Asia. However, after actually visiting Malaysia, my impression changed a lot. So, I would like to introduce it through my school life and daily life.

私が通っていたのはマレーシアの首都クアラルンプールの繁華街Bukit Bintanにある語学学校でした。私は学校から近いルームシェア型の寮に住んでいたので信号を使わなければ歩いて10分もかかりませんでした。学校が推奨している年齢が16歳以上なので同い年の子は1人しかいませんでした。また日本の学校が春休みということもあり日本人の大学生や高校生の割合は全体の5割くらいで、1クラスだと15人ぐらいでした。初日は空港から一緒だった大学生の女の子とマップをみながら行きました。始めにみんなレベル分けテストを受けて午後から早速授業がスタートするのですが、友達がいないということもあり最初はとても緊張したし、テストも全力を出せたかは分かりませんでした。授業中も今後の考え事ばかりしてしまい、集中できず先生にクラスを変えて欲しいとお願いするほどでした。しかし先生は初日だから緊張しているだけと言いクラスは変えてくれませんでした。これを言われた時は本当に鬼だと思いました。しかし慣れてくると少し難しい方が楽しいということに気づいたので今では感謝しています。午後の授業は主にディスカッションやゲームが多いので自分で意見を言わないと授業が進まないので最初はとても混乱しましたが、慣れていくととても楽しかったです。午前は学校での授業みたいな講義型でした。ただ日本と違うのは英語の説明を英語でしているので、意味を翻訳して覚えるのではなく状況説明や動きで覚えるというところです。そして初日の放課後に日本人の大学生の男の子が不安だろうから一緒にご飯を食べて学校周辺を案内すると誘ってくれました。私はここで改めて日本人の心の温かさを知りました。２日目からはわざと日本人を避けて席に座ったりして、外国人の友達を増やしていきました。そして最終日にはみんな友達に頼んでメッセージカードを書いてもらうのですが、私は8カ国語で書いてもらいました！

The school I attended was a language school in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. I lived in a shared dormitory near the school, so it took less than 10 minutes to walk there without using traffic lights. The school recommends students to be 16 years old or older, so there was only one student my age. Also, because it was spring vacation in Japan, about half of the students were Japanese high school or university students. On the first day, I went to school with a Japanese university student I met at the airport, using a map. First, we took a level test, and classes started in the afternoon. I was very nervous because I didn't have any friends yet, and I'm not sure if I did my best on the test. During the class, I couldn't focus because I kept thinking about my future, and I even asked the teacher to change my class. However, the teacher said I was just nervous because it was my first day and didn't change my class. At that time, I honestly thought the teacher was very strict. But after I got used to it, I realized that a slightly difficult class was actually more fun, so now I feel thankful. In the afternoon classes, we mainly had discussions and games, so I had to share my opinions. At first, I was very confused, but I gradually started to enjoy it. Morning classes were more like lecture-style lessons, like in Japan. However, unlike Japan, everything was explained in English, so I learned words through situations and actions instead of translating them into Japanese. After school on the first day, a Japanese university student invited me to have dinner and showed me around the area because he thought I might feel nervous. At that moment, I felt the kindness of Japanese people again. From the second day, I tried to avoid sitting with Japanese students on purpose and started making more international friends. On the last day, everyone asked their friends to write message cards, and I got mine written in eight different languages!

私がマレーシアに来て1番最初に感じたのが「エスカレーターが早い！」日本のエスカレーターと比べるとマレーシアのエスカレーターは降りる時に転ぶほど早かったです！特に早かったのは地下鉄の駅のエスカレーターです。乗るのも怖いくらいでした。私はホームステイではなかったので放課後や学校がない土日は友達と遊び放題でした。モスクへ行ったり、ツインタワーへ行ったり観光もたくさんしました。最初の1週間は夜遅くに出歩かないようにしようときちんと考えていたのですが、友達ができると夜に出かけることも少なくありませんでした。夜中の1時にご飯を食べに行ったり、寮のエントランスで集まって話したり日本では考えられないような生活をしていました。Bukit Bintanは夜の方が人が多く、歩いていると「Are you from Japan?」などと声をかけてくれる人が多くいろんな人と話しながら1人で歩いたりもしていました。海外の夜は1人で歩くと危ないと言われていますが、私は1人で歩くのも顔見知りが増えたり、いろんな景色が見れてとても楽しかったです！！また、マレーシアではGrabというタクシーアプリがあり日本よりも安価なので遊びに行く時はいつも使っていました。ただ、学校の先生や大きいショッピングモールでは気にならないのですが、タクシーの運転手はほとんどの人がマングリッシュと言われるマレー語の発音の英語多く、聞き取るのも会話するのも少し苦労しました。でも日本出身と伝えると翻訳してくれたり観光地やルールを説明してくれる人が多く人見知りな私でもタクシーに乗ることを楽しむことができました！

The first thing I noticed when I came to Malaysia was that the escalators were very fast. Compared to Japan, the escalators in Malaysia were so fast that I almost fell when I got off. The fastest ones were at the subway stations, and I was even scared to get on them. I was not staying with a host family, so after school and on weekends, I could spend a lot of time with my friends. We visited places like mosques and the Twin Towers, and we did a lot of sightseeing. During the first week, I tried not to go out late at night. However, after I made friends, I sometimes went out at night. I went out to eat at 1 a.m. and talked with friends at the dorm entrance. It was a lifestyle I could not imagine in Japan. In Bukit Bintang, there were more people at night, and many people talked to me, saying things like "Are you from Japan?" I sometimes walked alone while talking with different people. People often say it is dangerous to walk alone at night in other countries, but for me, it was very fun because I got to know more people and see many different sights!! Also, in Malaysia, there is a taxi app called Grab, and it is cheaper than in Japan, so I used it whenever I went out. However, while I had no problems understanding my teachers or people in big shopping malls, many taxi drivers spoke Manglish, which is English with a Malay accent, so it was sometimes difficult to understand and communicate. But when I told them I was from Japan, many of them tried to help me by using translation or explaining tourist spots and local rules. Even though I am a shy person, I started to enjoy taking taxis!

マレーシアにいる間にせっかくならということでエージェントが主催のマレーシアの大学見学に行ってきました。私が見学したのはオーストラリアと提携している公立大学と私立の名門大学2校の全３校みてきました。キャンパスの真ん中に大きい池があったり、隣に大きいシティーがあったりと日本の大学とは全く違うということを目の当たりにしました。また、授業方法も主にディスカッションで教室は全面ガラス張りなどが多く私的には好印象でした。

While I was in Malaysia, I took the opportunity to join a university tour organized by my agent. I visited three universities in total: a public university that has a partnership with Australia, and two well-known private universities. I was surprised to see how different they were from universities in Japan. For example, one campus had a large lake in the center, and another was located next to a big city. The teaching style was also different. Many classes were based on discussions, and some classrooms had glass walls. I had a very good impression of these learning environments.

私は小さい頃から海外に興味を持っていたので今回マレーシア留学という貴重な経験をできてとても嬉しいし、これからのことが楽しみでたまりません。私は初めての文化を知り、触れる瞬間が1番わくわくするし楽しいと思っています。これからもこのような経験をたくさんしていきたいです！

I have been interested in foreign countries since I was young, so I am very happy that I had this valuable experience of studying in Malaysia, and I am really excited about my future. I think the most exciting and enjoyable moments are when I learn about new cultures and experience them for the first time. I hope to have many more experiences like this in the future!!
