ごきげんよう！1月18日に日本を発ち、チュラヴィスタに到着してから約一か月が経ちました。時の流れは本当に速いと感じながらも、毎日楽しく過ごしています！

Hello! I left Japan on January 18th and I'm in Chula Vista. Now it has already been about 1 month since then. Time has gone by so fast, but I've been having a really great time here.

私のホームステイ先にはマザーとファザー、そして犬が二匹と、法律を学ぶ26歳の留学生がいます。基本このメンバーなのですが、毎週金曜日にはマザーの教会の友達とホームパーティーがあり、時々14歳の女の子がうちから学校へ通うために泊まりにきます。週末はショッピングに連れていったり観光へ連れて行ったりしてくれて毎週忙しくも楽しく過ごしています。私のマザーはとても優しい人で毎回夕食の後にゲームに誘ってくれたり友達とのピックルボール誘ってくれたりします。ファザーはおしゃべりがとても好きな人で、よく自分の双子の兄弟の話や映画の話をしてくれたりして毎日笑わせてくれます。最近は犬たちも私がいることに慣れたのか、懐いてくれています。

My host family members are my host mother, host father, two big dogs, and a 26-year-old exchange student who is studying law. Basically, these are the usual members, but every Friday, we have a home party with friends from the church of my host mother. And sometimes, a 14-year-old girl stays with us to attend school nearby. At weekends they take me shopping and sightseeing, so I'm really having a good time here. My host mother is a very kind person, and sometimes she invites me to play games, and sometimes she invites me to play pickleball with her friends. And my host father is a chatty person, so he tells me a lot about his twin brother and some movies, and makes me laugh. But it's more than that, though. Thankfully, recently, the dog has been getting along with me.

私が通っている高校はヒルトップ高校で私の家から約5分と、とても近いところにあります。この学校ではバディと同じ授業を取って、毎日同じ授業を受けているのでその単元をより詳しく学ぶことができます。私のバディはメキシコ人で若干スペイン語訛りの英語を話します。その上私の英語も完璧なものではないのでお互いに英語が理解し合えず笑ってしまうことがあります。

My high school is Hilltop High School and it's about a five-minute drive by car, and it is nearby. I'm taking the same class as my buddy, so I can learn that term more thoroughly. My buddy is Mexican, and she speaks English with a Spanish accent. My English is not perfect yet, so sometimes we can't understand what we're talking about to each other. That's funny.

私の取っている授業は1限体育、2限A.Pセミナー、3限環境科学、4限数学、5限日本語、6限アメリカ歴史です。こちらの体育には日本と違って筋トレの授業があります。他にも走ったり、バレーボールやバスケをしたり、逆に完全に自由な日などがあります。
２限のA.Pセミナーなのですが、これは高校生が大学レベルのクリティカルシンキング、リサーチ、プレゼンテーションスキルを一年間かけて養う、という日本の高校にはまだ導入されていないカリキュラムです。基本的にグループ活動でグループごとにテーマがありそのテーマに沿ってスライドをつくりプレゼンをします。私はタイミングもあり発表には参加してないのですが、どこもハイレベルの発表内容で見ていてとても楽しかったです。

The classes that I'm taking are period 1 P.E., period 2 AP seminar, period 3 environmental science, period 4 math, period 5 Japanese, period 6 American history. Compared with Japan, we have weight training in P.E here. Sometimes we run, play volleyball, basketball, and also have free time. And AP seminar in period 2, this is a curriculum in which high school students develop university-level critical thinking, research, and presentation skills over the course of a year, and I think this curriculum hasn't been introduced in Japanese high schools yet. Basically, we have themes for each group and research for that and make slides, and finally have a presentation about the research. Because of the timing, I haven't attended their presentation, but all the presentations were high-level, and it was really fun to watch.

３限の環境科学では、地球温暖化やリサイクル、生態系などについて学びます。4限の数学では今はちょうど私たちが去年学んだ三平方の定理や三角比などを学んでいます。アメリカの高校では基本的にみんな電卓を使うのですが、私は日本で電卓なしでみっちり数学力を鍛えられていたこともあり数学では毎回一番乗りに解き終え、少し優越感に浸っています。
お昼の時間は基本的にどこでとってもいいことになっていて、みんなそれぞれ委員会の仕事をしたり、友達やカップルで食べたり、それぞれ楽しい時間を過ごします。

In environmental science in period 3, we learn about global warming and the ecosystem. In math in period 4, we're learning about trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean theorem that we did last year. And what surprised me is that they are using calculators in math class! Of course, I improved my math skills without using calculators in Japan, so I would always be the first person to finish solving problems. And here we'll have lunchtime. We can eat anywhere and enjoy this time doing committee work, also staying with friends, lovers, and teachers.

5限の日本語ではコンビニでの会話や服屋での会話などのフレーズをペアワークを通して学びます。クラスメイトが一人ずつ日本の文化について15分ほどプレゼンする機会があったのですが、みんなサンリオや日本のギャルの文化などをトークテーマにしていて見ているこっちも楽しかったです。もちろん私もやりました！私は大妻多摩について発表したのですがこちらの学生には私立の女子高というのはあまり馴染みのないものらしくたくさん驚かれました。特に我々の校訓「恥を知れ」という言葉はより一層みんなの興味を引いたものでした。
6限のアメリカ歴史では日本でもちょうど学んだ三国干渉の範囲を学んでいます。私は元から歴史が苦手でさらに先生の高速の英語を理解しながら授業を進めなければいけないので毎日当てられないかひやひやしながら授業を受けています。

In Japanese in period 5, we learn some phrases through pair work. We have the opportunity to have a presentation about Japanese culture for about 15 minutes, and the themes were about Sanrio, Japanese gals. This was one of my most impressive memories for me. Of course I did too! It was not about Japanese culture but about my school. A private girls' school was not familiar to them, so it really caught their interest. Especially our school motto, "Reflect on Your Actions" made a strong impression on them, I think. American history in period 6 is the hardest subject for me. We're learning about the Triple Interference. First, I hate history and have to learn by listening to my teachers' machine gun English, so I'm always hoping not to be called on by the teacher.

放課後はみんなクラブ活動に励んだり友達とショッピングをしたりして楽しみます。私はまだクラブ活動には参加していないのですが私が日本でも所属している弦楽部があるので機会があれば挑戦してみたいと思います！他にも日本ではあまり見ないレスリング部やビーチバレー部などもあります。

After school, we usually do club activities and also go shopping. I don't belong to any clubs, but we have a string club here, so if there is an opportunity, I would like to try! We also have a wrestling club and beach volleyball club. I've never seen them in Japan, so I feel fresh.

私がアメリカで約一か月過ごしてみて気づいたことは、いかに自分の英語力が未熟であったかです。私は最初の一週間は授業中でも英語を理解するので精一杯で意見を求められても頭が真っ白になってしまうことが多く、とても悔しい思いをしました。またホストファミリーとの会話でも相手が何を言っているのか理解ができても自分の英語の語彙力だけでは説明しきれず自分が考えているのとはまた違ったように伝わったりもしてしまい、とても苦労しました。自分から英語を話そうとしなくてもこちらではみんなが英語を話しているので自然とリスニングの能力はついていきます。しかしスピーキングの能力というものはどうしても何回も何回も話してやっと身に付くものです。つまり自分が知っている単語や語彙力、フレーズを増やしていかないと一向にスピーキングの能力は上がらないということです。私は授業中はノートを開き先生が話している中で知らない単語があればとりあえず、メモします。そしてその後の昼食の時間でバディに聞いたり、家に帰って電子辞書で調べて意味をまたノートに書きこんだりしてなんとか覚えようとしています。また文法がばらばらでもいいのでホストファミリーと今日あったことを話してみたりして英語力を伸ばそうとがんばっています。

What I've noticed this month is how unskilled my English is. In the first week, just understanding their English was hard enough for me, and even though they asked for my opinion, I was confused, and my mind just went blank, and I couldn't answer. I really felt frustrated by that. And also with my host parents, it's good that we have a nice relationship, but sometimes I can't describe what I'm thinking because of my extremely low English vocabulary. It is not that hard for me to improve my listening skills, because I listen to their English and take communication even though I don't want to. But to improve my speaking skills, to talk in English a thousand times with people is the only way to become fluent in English. And to become fluent in English, I need to expand my vocabulary and know more words. So, in my class I tried to note the words I don't know, and after that I ask my buddy or go home and look them up in my dictionary. This is how I try to improve my English.

この一か月間本当にあっという間でした。まだまだ困ってしまうことはたくさんあるけれど、その分できることが少しずつ増えていっていると実感しています。これからはもっと行動してみて残りの一か月間を有意義に過ごしたいと思います！

This 1-month has really passed fast. There are still some problems though I believe that I'm growing up at that moment. So, from now on I would like to take more action and spend the remaining month meaningfully.
