ごきげんよう！私は南オーストラリア州のアデレードに留学しています。こちらに来て早くも一か月が経とうとしており、毎日たくさんの出会いや思い出が増え、濃密で充実した日々を送っています。ここでは学校の雰囲気やオーストラリアでの生活についてご紹介させていただきます。

Hello! I'm currently studying abroad in Adelaide, South Australia. It has already been almost a month since I arrived, and each day I experience new encounters and create wonderful memories. I'm spending rich and fulfilling days here. In this report, I would like to introduce the atmosphere of my school and what life in Australia is like.

まずは私が通っている学校の様子についてお話しようと思います。オーストラリアの学校は何といっても「自由」です。校則が少なく、生徒がそれぞれの個性を持てている印象です。さらに私の学校では毎朝無料でパンケーキを食べられたり、授業中に先生がアイスキャンディーをくれたりします。昼休みにヒップホップクラブとしてDJの方が学校に来て、ラップを披露してくれたり、参加型のゲームをして盛り上がったこともありました。このようにオーストラリアの学校は多くのイベントを企画してくれます。日本の学校ではなかなか無いような出来事やイベントがあるのはオーストラリアの学校の楽しいところだと思います。授業面については、私の学校はテストが少なく、代わりに課題を提出して成績を付けるというスタイルです。課題はすべてデータで行うのでパソコンがあれば問題なく授業を受けられます。日本の学校と比べて先生と生徒の距離が近く、生徒がたくさん質問をしている印象もあります。

First, I will talk about the school I attend. Schools in Australia are, above all, very "free." There are fewer strict rules compared to Japan, and I get the impression that students are encouraged to express their individuality. Furthermore, at my school, we can have free pancakes every morning. Sometimes teachers even give us an ice lolly during class. During lunch time, the DJs came to our school as part of a hip-hop club activity. They performed rap music and organized interactive games, which made the atmosphere very lively and exciting. In this way, Australian schools organize many different events for students. I think one of the most enjoyable aspects of studying in Australia is experiencing unique activities and events that are rarely seen in Japanese schools. In terms of academics, my school doesn't have many exams; instead, students are graded based on assignments. All of the assignments are submitted digitally, so as long as we have a computer, we can participate in class without any problems. Compared to school in Japan, the relationship between teachers and students feels much closer here. I also have the impression that students ask many questions during class.

私のホストファミリーはインドネシア人のマザーと二人のシスター、それに私を除いた５人の留学生でした。ホストファミリーの都合により止むを得ずホストチェンジをすることになってしまい、今は違うホストファミリーのお家で過ごしています。前のお家ではたくさんの留学生がいたためそれぞれが自分の国のことを話すなどで、私が留学を通して学びたかったことの一つである「異文化交流」に関する経験ができました。それと同時に「異文化理解」の難しさや大切さも身をもって実感しました。そのときはいろいろ悩んだりもしましたが、今では捉え方次第で自分にとって意味のある経験だったと思います。今、私がホームステイさせていただいているご家族はイタリアの出身で、ホストマザーとファザー、13歳のシスターと9歳のブラザーの４人家族です。みんなとてもフレンドリーで家族の一員になったように感じます。ご飯はイタリアン料理で、休日にはピザやティラミスなどを一緒に作ったりもしました。ホストファミリーはキリスト教を信仰していて毎週一緒に教会にも行かせてもらっています。教会には同世代の女の子からご年配のご夫婦まで来ていて、みんな初対面でも気軽に話しかけてくれ、教会に行くごとに新しい友達ができました。私は教会に行ったことがなかったのですが、今まで想像していた教会のイメージとはまったく異なり、とても楽しい場所で、新しい経験ができたり、新しい価値観も知れました。

My host family consisted of an Indonesian mother, her two daughters, and five other international students besides me. However, due to circumstances on my host family's side, I unfortunately had to change host families. I'm now staying with a different host family. At my previous host family's home, there were many international students, so each of us often shared about our own countries. Through this, I was able to have experiences related to "intercultural exchange," which was one of the things I wanted to learn through studying abroad. At the same time, I also personally realized both the challenges and the importance of "intercultural understanding." At the time, I struggled with many things, but now I feel that, depending on how I look at it, it was a meaningful experience for me. The host family I'm currently staying with is from Italy. It consists of the host mother, host father, a 13-year-old sister, and a 9-year-old brother. Everyone is very friendly, and I feel like a part of their family. I always have Italian cuisine. On weekends, we sometimes make dishes together, such as homemade pizza and tiramisu. My host family is Christian, and I got to attend church with them every week. At the church, there are people of all ages, from teenagers to elderly couples. Everyone is very friendly and talks to me easily, even if we are meeting for the first time. Every time I go to church, I make new friends. I had never been to a church before, but it was completely different from the image I had imagined. It is a very enjoyable place where I can have new experiences and learn new perspectives.

最後にオーストラリアと日本の生活面での違いを紹介しようと思います。
オーストラリアの信号機はすべて押しボタン式です。さらにシティから離れた、私が住んでいる辺りでは信号すらも少ないです。実はオーストラリアでは信号が無くても車が来てないことを確認して渡るのが一般的です。運転手の人とアイコンタクトをすると道を譲ってくれることもあります。
２月から３月のオーストラリアは夏真っ只中でとても暑い時期とされています。実際に日中の気温が４４度という日もあったほどです。しかし気温差がとても激しく、翌週には最低気温がなんと８度ということもありました。なので寒暖差対策が必要です。私は指定の長袖を学校から貸していただき調節しています。

Finally, I would like to introduce the differences in daily life between Australia and Japan.
In Australia, all traffic lights have buttons for pedestrians. In addition, in areas farther from the city, like where I live, there are not many traffic lights at all. In fact, in Australia, it is common to cross the street after checking that no cars are coming, even if there is no traffic light. Sometimes, if you make eye contact with a driver, they will stop and let you cross.
February to March is a very hot season in Australia. There were days when the daytime temperature reached as high as 44 degrees Celsius. However, the temperature difference is very extreme, and the following week the minimum temperature dropped to as low as 8 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare for these temperature changes. I adjust by borrowing the designated long-sleeved uniform from my school.

最初の頃は何もかもが新しく、さまざまなことにつまずいて悩んでいました。ですがそのたくさん悩んだ時間があるから様々な角度から物事を考えられるようになったと思います。もちろん留学は楽しいことだけではなくしんどいこともあります。それを「どう捉えて次につなげるか」を考えることが大事だと身をもって実感しました。残り一か月となりましたが、今よりもさらに充実させた生活にできるように、積極性を忘れずに努力していきたいです。

At first, everything was new, and I stumbled and struggled with many things. However, I think spending so much time worrying has helped me learn to look at things from different perspectives. Studying abroad is not only fun but also challenging at times. I have personally realized that it is important to think about how to perceive these difficulties and turn them into opportunities for growth. I want to make the most of the remaining month and live an even more fulfilling life, so I will continue to put in effort with a proactive attitude.
