こんにちは。私はオーストラリアのメルボルンにあるスウィンバン工科大学で幼児教育を勉強しています。

去年の7月にこちらにきた時は、自分の英語力や、違う国で１人で暮らすという事など、全ての事において不安しかありませんでした。授業や課題についていけるかが一番心配で、全く理解できず自分だけ取り残されるだろうと思っていましたが、実際に学期が始まると想像していたより大丈夫でした。とても優しい先生方ばかりで、困っている時には助けてくれる友達もできました。毎日数百ページ分の文章を読むのに加え、ほぼ毎週2000字のエッセイを提出しなければいけなかったので、毎日友達とキャンパス内の図書館で夜遅くまで勉強し、行き詰まった時にはアイディアを出し合ったりお互いに助け合い乗り越えることができました。勉強する量はとてつもなく多かった為辛かったですが、今までの人生でこんなに勉強した経験がなかったですし、ただ辛いだけではなく実際に何かを学べている気がしていたので、とても充実した日々を過ごせました。

Hello, I am currently a student studying Early Childhood Education at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.
I was so scared about everything when I came here all alone in June, especially my English skills and the fact that I had to live in a different country all alone. I was so worried about being able to keep up with the lectures and assignments, but once the semester started, it was not as bad as I thought it would be. The lecturers were all very kind people, and most of all, I made good friends who would help me. We had a 2000-word essay due almost every week on top of hundreds of pages of reading every day, so we would study every day in the library until very late, and sometimes we got stuck, but we shared ideas and helped each other and got through the semester. The amount of work we had to do made me very stressed, but I’d never studied that much in my life, so I felt very productive and I actually felt like I was learning something.

メルボルンは色々な国から来ている人がいるので、様々な国の人達と友達になれて、他の国の文化や宗教などを知ることができるという良い点があります。私も多くの国の友達を作り、よく日本の文化とそれぞれの国の文化の違いなどについて話したりします。宗教の違いもよく話題に出るので、様々な宗教の事情を聞くのもとても興味深いです。どこか遊びに行く時などは、毎回全員の宗教を考慮しなければいけなく、たとえばイスラム教の友達はハラルのレストランでしか食事ができない為、それを探すのに何件もレストランを回ったりすることはよくあります。

また、キリスト教の友達に食べる前にお祈りをしていいか聞かれ、全員分のお祈りをしてくれたこともあります。こっちに来て驚いた事は、初対面の人に最初に聞かれるのが宗教という事です。日本人はそんなに決まった「宗教」がある人はいなく、あったとしても意識して信仰している人は少ない、と答えると、毎回驚かれます。自分は宗教について詳しくないので、聞かれた時にきちんと答えられるように、日本の宗教について調べるようになり、日本にいる時には知らなかった事をたくさん知ることができました。こっちに来てから、オーストラリアのことだけでなく日本のことについても同じぐらい知識を得て、まずは自国のことをよく知ることが一番大切だということに気づきました。

One good thing about studying in Melbourne is that you can make friends from all across the world and get to know about different cultures and religions. I made friends from many countries, and we often talk about the cultural differences between Japan and their countries. It is also very interesting to learn about their religions too. Every time we go out somewhere, we always have to consider everyone's religious beliefs; like one time it took us a very long time to find a restaurant to eat as one of my friends was a Muslim and he could not eat pork, and another time, when we were about to eat food together, my Christian friend did a prayer asking if he could bless the food. One thing that surprised me was that whenever you meet someone new, one of the first questions they ask you is your religion, and whenever I tell them that most Japanese people don’t have a “specific” religion, they act very surprised. To be able to explain these things more clearly to them, I started studying about religion in Japan on the Internet, and I gained so much knowledge that I didn’t have when I was in Japan. Since I came here, I am not only learning about Australia but also learning as much things about Japan, and I realised that knowing about your country first is the most important.


11月から2月末まである夏休みには、毎週のように友達と海に行き泳いでいました。オーストラリアの海は水がとても綺麗で、こっちでは海に行くぐらいしかすることがない為、夏暇な時は皆海にいきます。また、私が住んでいる寮にはエアコンがない為、気温が４０度ともなると家の中にいるのは危険で、海に行くか、どこか涼しい場所に避難するしか選択肢はありません。オーストラリアでは東京に比べ、時間がゆっくり流れている感じがあり、人々もゆったりしています。そして何よりフレンドリーで優しい人が多く、よく電車やトラムのなかで知らない人同士が仲良くなったりしている光景を目にします。

During the semester break, which is from November to the end of February, I would go to the beach almost every week and swim with friends, which was really fun. Most people here hang out at beaches when they have free time, because there is nothing else to do in Melbourne, and the water is extremely nice and clear. Also, my place does not have an air conditioner, so when it gets up to 40 degrees, I obviously can’t stay at home. I feel like time goes so slow here and everyone is so relaxed compared to Tokyo, and most of all, the people here are all so friendly and kind. I often see strangers chatting on trains or trams and becoming friends.


こちらにきてから大変なことも多くトラブルもたくさんありましたが、自分がここで勉強できていることはとてもありがたく思っていて、メルボルンの大学に通うと決めたことは自分にとってとても良かったと思います。来週から始まる新しい学期では、20日間の幼稚園での実習があるので緊張していますが、頑張って乗り越えて、これからもたくさんのことを学び、ここでの生活が無駄な時間にならないように日々を過ごしていきたいです。

Although there were many troubles and stressful things since I came here, I am very grateful for being able to study here, and coming here was definitely the best choice I have made. A new semester is going to start from next week (I need more break ), and I will have a placement in a nursery for 20 days in April, so I am quite nervous about that. However, I will do my best at all times, learn new things, and make the most of my time in Melbourne.
