ごきげんよう！ 私は現在、ニュージーランドのオークランドという都市に留学しています。ニュージーランドでの生活は慣れないことも多いですが、周りの人に恵まれ、毎日とても楽しく過ごしてます。

Hi! I’m studying in Auckland New Zealand. It’s hard for me to get used to life in New Zealand, but I’m blessed with people around me. So, I’m enjoying every day!

〔ホストファミリー〕

私のホームステイ先にはメキシコ人のホストマザーと1歳下のホストブラザー、そして猫が一匹います。ホストファミリーはとてもアウトドアで毎週末様々な場所に連れて行ってくれます。大きな公園でウォーキングをしたりビーチに行ったりフェスに行ったり、新しい経験ばかりでとても楽しく充実しています。夜ご飯を食べた後や天気が悪い日などは家の中でホストファミリーとドラマや映画を鑑賞したり、ボードゲームをして遊んでいます。ボードゲームの中にはメキシコのゲームもあり、英語ではなくスペイン語でしたが、教えてもらいながら楽しむことができました。ホストファミリーはニュージーランドに移住してから10年以上経っているそうですが、最初の方はやはり英語に苦労したそうで、私が「みんなの話す英語が早くて全く聞き取れない」と相談したところ、「私たちもそうだったから気持ちがよく分かるよ」と親身に話を聞いてくれました。ホストファミリーはとても親切で協力的なので日々助けられています。

My host family is a Mexican host mother, a host brother, who is one year younger than me, and one cat. They are outdoor people, so they often take me to various places every weekend; for example, walking in the big park, going to the beach, and festivals. There are many new experiences, so it’s fun and fulfilling every day. We often watch movies or dramas and play board games at home on rainy days or after dinner. There were some Spanish board games, but my host family taught me how to play them in English, so I could enjoy it. They seem to have been in New Zealand for over 10 years however, they had a hard time at the beginning. So I consulted, “ Everyone was speaking too first to understand what they were saying”. Then the host family listened to me kindly and said, “We understand how you feel because we had the same experiences.” They are very collaborative and kind to me, so it helps me every day.

〔交通〕

私のホームステイ先はシティの中心地から少し離れているので買い物などに行く時はいつもバスや電車を利用します。正直私は交通機関の乗り換えが苦手なのですが、ニュージーランドの駅は日本ほど複雑ではないので乗り換えがしやすかったです。

My homestay is a little far away from the city center, so I use buses and trains when I go shopping. Honestly, I’m not good at transferring, but the station in New Zealand is not as confusing as in Japan, so it’s easy to transfer.

〔学校生活〕

私が通っている学校はシティの中心部に位置する公立の女子校です。私はバスと電車を利用し、約1時間かけて登校しています。
初めて授業を受けた日はネイティブの話のスピードに圧倒され、先生の指示やバディの言っていることが全く聞き取れず、自分の今の英語力ではコミュニケーションが取れないことにショックを受けました。しかし、友達ができないまま留学を終わらせたくなかったので、まずは「とにかく笑顔を忘れないでいること」を大切にしました。話すことが難しくても、明るく話しかけやすい雰囲気とやる気があることが伝われば、クラスのみんなが親切に協力してくれました。今ではバディを含めた現地校の友達と芝生の上でお昼ご飯を食べたり、お菓子をシェアしたり、カードゲームをしたりして休み時間を過ごしています。Morning tea timeとlunch timeにはスクールランチの他にブラウニーやスナック、フルーツなどをもらうことができます。日によってメニューが異なるので私の毎日の楽しみになっています。
授業は6つのうち、Math・Science・Englishが必修で残りの３つが生徒によって異なる授業です。どの授業を受けるかは自分で決めることが出来ませんでしたが、私はDrama・PE・Danceの授業があります。全て体を動かすことが多い授業なので辞書や翻訳を使う暇がなく、はじめはとても苦労しました。特にDramaの授業は日本でも受けたことがないうえ、留学生が私1人だけだったのでクラスに馴染める気がしませんでした。しかし、拙い英語で演技をしても必ずクラスの子達が“Good job!!”と言ってくれるので緊張しすぎず、楽しく授業を受けることができていて、今は私の1番大好きな授業です！最近は沢山の友達ができ、「ずっとここにいてほしい！」と言ってくれる子や「会ったときは必ずこのHandshakeをやろう！」と言ってくれる子もいて、周りの人に恵まれているなと改めて実感しています。 また、さまざまなことに挑戦することを目標にしているので、先日放課後に保育園のボランティアに参加しました。難しい英語を使わずにコミュニケーションが取れるのでとても楽しく、良い経験になりました。来週も参加する予定です。

My school in New Zealand is a public girls’ school located in the city center. I go there by taking a bus and train, and it takes 1 hour. On the first day of the class, I was overwhelmed by the speed of native speakers, and I couldn’t get what the teachers and my buddy said. So, I was shocked at my English level. However, I didn’t want to finish my studying abroad without making any friends, so I treasured, “In any way, do not forget to smile.” Even if it’s difficult to talk in English, with a bright, approachable, and motivated atmosphere, my classmates kindly cooperate with me. Now I spend breaks eating lunch, sharing sweets, and playing card games with my friends at school on the grass. Also, students can get school lunches, brownies, snacks, and fruits at morning tea time and lunchtime. The menu changes every day, so I look forward to every day.
Of the six subjects, math, science, and English are compulsory, and the remaining three are different depending on the student. I couldn’t decide it myself. I take drama, PE, and dance classes. I didn’t have time to use a dictionary and translation because all of the classes required physical activity, so I had a hard time in the beginning. Especially, in the drama class, I hadn’t taken the class and international students were only me, so I didn’t think I fit in the class. However, classmates always say, “Good job!!” even if I act in poor English, so I’m not too nervous and I’m able to enjoy the class. Now, drama class is my favorite. Recently, I have made many friends, some of whom said, “I want you to stay here forever!” and “Let’s do this handshake every time we meet!”, so I realized again that I am blessed with people around me.
Also, my goal is to try various things,　so the other day, I volunteered at a kindergarten after school. I could communicate without difficult words, so I enjoyed it and it was a great experience. I will volunteer at the same place next week.

〔日本との違い〕

私がニュージーランドに来て感じたことは自然保護の意識の高さです。大きな公園の中に入るときや船に乗るときは、靴についた害虫をそのまま森や海に持ち込まないよう、靴の底を綺麗にする場所があります。それもただマットで足を拭くようなものではなく、まずはブラシで綺麗にし、そのあとは水で洗います。このようなものは日本で見たことがなかったので驚きました。
また、ニュージーランドは全く知らない人でもよく服や髪を褒めてくれるので、フレンドリーな人が沢山いるなと感じています。私が特に驚いたのは電車を降りたあと、窓越しに知らない女の子がジェスチャーで服を褒めてくれたことです。ジェスチャーで会話ができたのはほんの数秒でしたが、とても嬉しい気持ちになりました。このような些細なことが積み重なり、ニュージーランド全体の幸福度を高めているんだなと感じました。

日本にいたら絶対にできなかったであろう経験をしたり、思いがけない壁にぶつかったりすることもありますが、その度に少しずつ自分の成長を実感することができています。長いようで短い二ヶ月間の留学ですが、残り約一ヶ月も留学中だからこそできる経験を沢山するため、楽しむことを第一に様々なことに挑戦をしていきたいです。

When I came to New Zealand, I felt the country has a high consciousness of nature conservation. There are places to clean the bottom of shoes not to bring pests attached shoes to the forests and sea when we enter a big park and get on the boat. It’s not just wiping shoes with a mat. First, we clean with a brush, then wash the bottom of the shoes with water. I was surprised because I had never seen something like this.

Also, I felt there were many friendly people in New Zealand because even strangers often complimented me on my clothes and hair. I was surprised especially after I got off the train, a girl I didn’t know looked at me through the window and complimented my clothes with her body language. It’s a few seconds, but I felt happy. I think these little things add up and add to the happiness of New Zealand as a whole.

I have had experiences that I would never have had if I had stayed in Ja pan, and I have faced some unexpected barriers, but each time, I could realize my own growth.
Studying for two months seems long but it’s short. In the remaining month, I want to try various things with fun as my first priority to get the experiences I can only have while studying abroad.
