ごきげんよう。私は今、オーストラリアのアデレードに留学しています。
私は幼い頃から英会話教室に通っていたものの、今まで一度も海外経験をしたことがなく、初めての環境の中、自分の英語力で２か月間生きていけるかとても不安でした。今日は、そんな私の留学生活について紹介したいと思います！

Hi! I am studying abroad in Adelaide, Australia now. I have been learning English since I was little at English conversation school, but I had never been abroad before. So, I was anxious about if I could live in a foreign country with my English skills. Today, I will introduce my study abroad life.

〔ホームファミリーについて〕

私のホームステイ先には、ホストマザー、ホストマザーのパートナー、ペットの犬、そして同じく留学中の１つ上のドイツ人留学生がいます。なんと全員出身地が違うため、夕食の時間などの会話では、オーストラリアという一つの国にいるものの、たくさんの国の文化について知ることが出来ています。
普段は、私の家はあまりテレビを見ないため、夕食後や放課後のちょっとした時間にはよくみんなで映画やアニメをみたりしています。私の家はホストファミリーが若い方で年齢が近いということもあり、私たち留学生の気持ちを理解してくれていて、みんな自分のやりたいことをするという自由な雰囲気でとても過ごしやすいです。
休日には、近くのショッピングモールやビーチによく連れて行ってくれます。先日、ホストマザーの誕生日会に参加した際には、日本の誕生日パーティーよりもとても大々的で、家族だけではなく、親戚やホストマザーの友達も一緒に参加していたため大変盛り上がり、とても楽しかったです。また、ドイツ人の留学生が私よりも半年ほど早くオーストラリアに来ているため、時々ビーチなどのおすすめの観光地に一緒に遊びに行ってくれたり、私が学校で困っていることがあるとアドバイスしてくれたりしていてとても助かっています。

About my home family

My host family has a host mother, her partner, a dog, and a German international student, who is one year older than me. Surprisingly, everyone’s birthplace is different! Because of this, even though, I can learn many countries’ cultures while in Australia.
We often watch movies and anime together after school or after dinner because my host family doesn’t watch TV so much. My host family is young and close to us in age, so they understand international students feelings like me. Because of that, everyone is doing what they want in their free time, and I can live very comfortably.
On weekends, they often take me to shopping malls or beaches in Adelaide. Recently, I joined my host mother's birthday party. It was much larger than the Japanese one. Not only their family but also their relatives and friends joined the party. and it was a lot of fun. Also, the German student, who came to Australia about half a year earlier than me, sometimes takes me to sightseeing places, such as beaches, and when I have some problems at school, she always gives me some advice. Therefore, she has been very helpful and kind to me.

〔学校について：About school life〕
学校は、Roma Mitchell Secondary Collegeという現地の公立学校に通っています。この学校はとても大きな学校で、私はいつも女子キャンパスと共学のキャンパスの授業を行き来しています。そのおかげか、たくさんの現地の友達と出会うことが出来ています。留学当初、現地の子の友達を作ることが出来るかということが一番心配だったので、私は各教科のクラスメイトにとにかく話しかけたり、その他の時間でもすれ違ったときに挨拶を必ずしたりすることを心がけていました。しかし、この学校は留学生を積極的に迎え入れていて、さらに日本語の授業がオーストラリアの選択科目の一つにあることもあり、みんな留学生には興味津々でいてくれていて、特に日本語の授業をとっている子は日本から来たと言うとたくさん日本について聞いてきてくれます。中には、「日本に行ったことあるよ」、「これは日本語でなんていうの？」などという風に自分から話しかけてくれる子もいるくらいです。そのため、今ではたくさんの現地の子と友達になることが出来ています。また、今度現地の友達とショッピングモールに遊びに行く予定なのでとても楽しみです。

I go to Roma Mitchell Secondary College, which is a local public school in Australia. It's a very big school, and I always move classes between the girls' campus and the co-ed campus. Thanks to this, I can meet many local friends. Before I came to Australia, the biggest thing that I was worried about was making friends with local students. So, I have tried to talk to my classmates in each subject and greet my classmates when passing them. Luckily, this school welcomes many international students, and they have Japanese classes as one of the elective courses in Australia. Because of this, everyone is very interested in international students. Especially, students who take Japanese classes ask me about Japan a lot when I tell them that I came from Japan. Some of them said, “I have been to Japan!”　“How do you say this in Japanese? Some students even speak to me on their own, saying things like, “I've been to Japan!” By doing so, I've been able to make many local friends. I'm going to the shopping mall with my local friends soon, so I am really looking forward to it!

授業は、オーストラリアの学校は日本とは違い、７教科と少なく、そのうちの約半分の教科が日本にはない教科です。私がその中でも、興味を持った科目は３D Printing and Roboticsという３Dプリンターを扱った授業です。コンピューター上で毎回決められた内容のものの設計図を作成し、最終的には３Dプリンターで実際にプリントするという作業をしています。私は機械が本当に苦手で、この授業はついていけないときもあるくらい毎回苦労の連続なのですが、日本では公立学校に３Dプリンターはなく、私立学校ですら相当な理系に力を入れている学校にしかないイメージなので、とても貴重な経験だと思っています。ところが、現地の子はとても慣れているようで、みんな作業をすぐに終わらせ、私がうまくいかず戸惑っていると毎回手伝ってくれたり教えてくれたりしてくれます。このような助けもあり、課題をこなせた時はとても達成感があります。
また、理系科目(数学や理科)では、日本のほうがオーストラリアよりも進んでいるため、比較的余裕をもって授業に臨めるのですが、授業終わりに現地の友達が「これどうやって解くの？」と尋ねてくれたときに、解説した後に嬉しそうにすらすら解けるようになってくれたときは、私の英語でも伝わったのだと本当にうれしかったです。私はこのようなオーストラリアの授業を受けて、オーストラリアは日本のような座学ではなく、将来の職業を見据えた教科に力を入れているのだなと感心しました。

The school curriculum in Australia is different from Japan. School in Australia has only seven subjects, about half of which are not in Japanese schools. Among them, the most interesting subject to me is "3D Printing and Robotics," which uses 3D printers. In this class, we first create design drawings of items, which our teachers gave us as an assignment on the computer, and finally print them out using a 3D printer. I'm not good at using machines, so this class is hard for me, and I sometimes can't keep up in class. However, we rarely have 3D printers at school in Japan, so I think this is a very precious experience. But the local students look used to it, and they always finish their tasks quickly and help me when I have some problems in this class. Thanks to their help, I feel great when I complete the assignments.
Also, in science subjects (mathematics and science), Australia’s curriculum is easier than in Japan, so I can attend classes with room in mind. Sometimes when a local friend asks me at the end of class, "How do you solve this?" After my explanation, they could solve it smoothly and they looked so happy. I am so happy to be able to explain how to solve in my English. In this way, I think that schools in Australia prepare students for future careers, which is different from just classroom learning, like in Japan.

〔留学での気づきについて: Insights of study abroad in Australia〕

オーストラリアは、多民族国家ということは知っていたのですが、ホームステイ先だけでなく、学校でも「どこ出身なの？」と聞くと、ベトナムやシリアなどの他国が出身地なことが多く、とても驚きました。ランチの時間では、同じテーブルに日本語、英語、ベトナム語などのたくさんの言語が混ざってしまっているくらいです。そのため、人種や宗教に対する差別などは存在せず、むしろ会話をしていても互いにそれぞれの出身国を尊重しているような感じがして、とても過ごしやすいです。これは、おそらくオーストラリアにしか見られない光景だと思います。
また、先日バレンタインデーだったのですが、ホストマザーにパートナーにチョコレートを渡すのか聞いたところ、不思議そうな顔をされたので話を聞いてみるとオーストラリアは日本とは違い、オーストラリアは女性が男性にチョコレートを渡すのではなく、むしろ男性から女性に渡す、もしくはお互いに交換する文化だそうです。これも日本とオーストラリアにおける文化違いだと感心しました。

I knew Australia is a multicultural country, but I was surprised to find that not only in my homestay but also at school, when I asked, "Where are you from?", many of the students were from other countries, like Vietnam or Syria. For example, during lunch, I can hear various languages, like Japanese, English, and Vietnamese at the same table. As a result, there seems to be no discrimination against race or religion. Rather, I can feel like everyone respects each other's countries when I am talking with people in Australia, and this situation makes it very comfortable to be here. I think this is one of the charms in Australia.
Also, on Valentine's Day, I asked my host mother if she would give her partner some chocolate, and she looked like she was wondering about this question. After talking to her, I learned that it is different from Japan. In Australia, it's not women who give chocolate to men, but instead, it’s men who give it to women, or they exchange gifts with each other. I was impressed by the cultural difference between Japan and Australia.

私は留学してすぐは、授業どころか現地の友達やホストファミリーの言っていることも聞き取れなかったり、自分の伝えたいことが正確に伝えられないことがあったりしましたが、今ではだいぶ慣れたこともあり、最近は授業も聞き取れるようなり始め、現地の友達やホストファミリーとも留学当初よりもコミュニケーションができるようになってきました。

残りの約１か月間も目標をたてて、充実した留学生活にできるように頑張ります。

When I first started my study abroad, I couldn't understand what my local friends or host family were saying, and I also had a lot of trouble with what I wanted to say when talking to someone. However, I can get used to it now, recently, I've started to understand the lessons and communicate better with my local friends and host family than at first. I'm going to set goals and do my best to make my study abroad a great experience.
