ごきげんよう。私は１月の下旬からオーストラリアのブリスベンに留学しています。留学期間の折り返しも近づいていますが、とても濃く充実した日々を送ることができています。

Good day! I have been studying in Brisbane, Australia since the end of January. I'm having satisfying and productive days here.

〔ホストファミリーについて〕

私のホストファミリーは5人家族で、両親のNikkiさんとPhilさん、姉のJazminと兄のXander、妹のIndianaがいます。また、プードルのJax、ブルーヒーラーのTillyとBear、その子犬10匹もいる大家族です。それに加えて、親戚付き合いや友達付き合いが深く、よく両親や兄弟が様々な人を家に招いています。そのためいつでも誰かがリビングで過ごしていて、一人っ子の私はとても新鮮な心地でした。特に新鮮に感じたのが、兄弟の恋人たちとファミリーがとても親しくしていることでした。お互いの家に頻繁に泊まったり、家族ぐるみでお茶をしたり、恋人以外ともとても仲が良い様子でした。日本では家族ぐるみの付き合いは結婚してからが多いイメージでしたのではじめは少し驚いてしまいましたが、とてもよい関係性だと思います。

私の滞在させてもらっているおうちは都市部からは離れており、閑静で自然豊かな住宅街が広がっています。家を取り囲むように自然保護区があるため、窓の外からでもワラビーやクッカバラ、アイビスなどをたくさん見かけることができます。私はよく放課後に家の庭に出て、犬と戯れたり野鳥を観察したりしています。また、日暮れには美しい夕日を、夜には満天の星空を眺めることができ、自然を肌で感じることができています。

休日は家族全員でどこかへ出かけることもありますが、基本的にはそれぞれが自分の友人と遊んでいることが多いです。そのため私は誰かに一緒について行かせてもらったり、一人でバスに乗って出かけたりしています。ショッピングモールやスーパーの中を観察していると、売っている商品や値段の違い、陳列の仕方や広告の出し方など、小さいながらも様々な違いがありとても興味深いです。

About my host family

There are five people in my host family: Nikki, Phil, Jazmin, Xander, and Indiana. They also have a poodle named Jax, a couple of blue heelers named Tilly and Bear, and their 10 puppies. It is a very big family. In addition, my host family has close relationships with relatives and friends, and they often invite various people over to our house. There is always someone spending time in the living room, and I found it new as an only child. What I felt particularly fresh about was how close the siblings' lovers were with each other's family. They frequently stayed over at each other's houses, had tea together, and seemed to get along with them. In Japan, I had the impression that family friends usually come after marriage, so I was surprised at first, but I think it's a very good relationship.

My host family's house is in the countryside, surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary. Nature is very beautiful and silent as we can hear birds chirping. Sometimes we can see wallabies, kookaburras, and ibises outside the window. I often walk around the garden after school and play with the dogs or watch birds. The sunset and stars will be seen very clearly and beautifully. I feel the nature nearby here.

On weekends, everyone in my family spends time or goes out with their own friends. Therefore, I usually follow one of them or go out by myself using the bus. When I go to shopping malls and supermarkets, I check out the products sold, the prices of them, the way they are displayed, and the methods of advertising them. It is very interesting to find the difference between Japan and Australia.

〔学校について〕

私は姉妹校のBrigidine Collegeに通っています。校内の敷地はとても広く、たくさんの緑にあふれていて、よく鳥が羽を休めていたりご飯を食べていたりする姿を見ることができます。時折教室の前を歩いていて驚くこともあります。

Year10ではEnglish, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Religion, P.E., Formation, Pathway, それに加え２つの選択科目があり、私はDigital DesignとJapaneseを取っています。教科書の文章を使うことの多い日本とは違い、オーストラリアでは先生の作成したOneNoteや実際の新聞記事、サイトを使用して授業を行います。そのため教員によってやっている内容が全く異なる場合もあります。また、個人作業やグループワークが授業の殆どを占める科目が多く、自らの言葉を使って表現することが常に求められます。はじめの頃は毎授業とても苦労しながら仕上げていましたが、おかげで英語力はもちろん、表現力と発言力が鍛えられたと思います。

一方MathematicsやScienceは比較的日本と授業の進め方が似ており、スライドや動画を使って先生が講義を行い、演習をするという流れが基本です。理論の理解がとても大切な科目なので、生徒主体で進めていくことの多いオーストラリアでも講義の割合が高いのかなと感じました。

どの授業も充実していてとても面白いですが、私が最も興味深いと感じる授業はReligionです。Religionでは、宗教画や賛美歌を通じて、人々が神をどのように捉えているのかについて学習しています。同じキリスト教であっても時代や地域によって神に対し全く異なる印象を抱いていてとて興味深いです。キリスト教の教えを受けるのではなく、自分にとっての「神」とは何かということを毎回考えさせられる授業だと感じています。

私がこの学校に通って驚いたことは、日本でよくある年功序列の考え方が全く見受けられなかったことでした。Brigidine Collegeでは学年混合で所属するhouseでホームルームや学校行事を行うため、皆でゲームをしたり、お喋りをしたりする機会が多くあり、学年に関係なく絆を深めることができます。そのため、「先輩・後輩」ではなく「友人・知人」としての意識が強くなるのかなと感じました。また、学年や年齢を超えて交流することで一人一人の個性や性格がよりはっきりと見えてくるため、一層年齢という区分を気にしなくなるのかなと考えました。

About school

I have been studying at Brigidine College, Otsuma Tama's sister school. 　The campus is huge and full of nature. We can see birds eating and resting, sometimes walking beside the classes.

In Year 10, we have English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Religion, P.E., Formation, Pathway, and 2 elective subjects. I am taking Digital Design and Japanese.
In Australian classes, we use actual articles, websites, and One Notes that our teacher made. We don't use textbooks like in Japan. Sometimes we do quite different things depending on the teacher.
As most classes consist of individual work and group work, we're constantly required to express things in our own words. At first, I struggled with it, but thanks to that, my speaking English ability has improved a lot.

On the other hand, I feel Mathematics and Science classes are similar to Japan. The teacher lectures us using slides and videos, and we solve questions that are given. Since understanding the theory is very important in these subjects, maybe we have lectures in Australia as well.
All classes are fulfilling and very interesting, but the subject that I find most fascinating is Religion. In Religion, we learn about how people perceive God through religious paintings and hymns. Even within Christianity, people have completely different impressions of God depending on the time and region. It is very interesting. This class doesn’t just teach Christian doctrine but also makes me think about what “God” means to me.

What surprised me the most at this school was that I did not see the seniority system here. At Brigidine College, since homeroom and school events are conducted in houses that are mixed grades, we can play games and chat together not depending on grades. Therefore, I felt that the awareness of friends would be stronger than that of seniors and juniors. Moreover, by interacting beyond grade levels and ages, each person's individuality and personality become clearer, and as a result, we might care even less about age.

〔終わりに〕

私はBrigidine Collegeでの留学を通して、様々なことを楽しみながら学び、吸収できています。残りの一カ月も一日一日を大切に過ごし、この留学をより実りあるものにしたいです。
