こんにちは。私はカナダのオタワにターム留学しています。オタワはカナダの首都ですが私のホームステイ先や学校の周辺は自然豊かで辺り一面は雪景色が広がっています。

　渡航して数日は慣れない環境への緊張や時差ぼけで寝付けない日が続きました。しかし、ホストファミリーが温かく迎えてくださり徐々に安心して寝付けるようになりました。
　また、レストランやショッピングに行くたびに留学生の私にWelcome to Canada！と声をかけてくれたり、留学生の私にこの町は寒いからと帽子とマフラーをくれたりなど暖かい街だなと日々感じています。

Hello！ I have been studying in Ottawa, Canada.  Ottawa is a typical Canadian city, but my host family’s house and high school are surrounded by nature and snow.
Because of nervousness about the unfamiliar environment and jet lag, I could not sleep well for a couple of days after arriving.  But my host family welcomed me warmly, so it is getting to sleep well.  Also, every time I go to a restaurant or go shopping, clerks say “Welcome to Canada!” to me as an international student, and give me a hat and scarf because it is cold in this town.  I feel the warmth of this town every day!

〔ホームステイ先での生活〕

　私はホストマザーとホストファザーと犬と暮らしています。ホストマザーもホストファザーも仕事をしていてとても忙しい人なのですが、いろいろなところに連れて行ってくれたり、私の拙い英語にいつも耳を傾けてくれたりしてくれており本当に感謝しています。そんな優しいホストファミリーともっと円滑に会話がしたいと思うようになりそれが私の英語学習の大きな原動力になっていると思います。

　ホストファミリーとは放課後に買い物をしたり、休日にはカナダ歴史博物館や世界遺産であるリドー運河に行ったりなど毎週様々なところに連れて行ってもらっています。運河は冬になるとスケートリンクとなり多くの地元の人が通勤通学の交通手段としてスケートをしていました。歴史博物館ではカナダ先住民の伝統的な踊りであるPOW WOWを見ました。新しい発見の毎日で充実した日々を過ごさせてもらっています。

I live with my host father, host mother, and their dog.  My host parents are working, so they are busy during the day.  But they take me to many places and listen to my poor English seriously.  I appreciate it very much.  I think my desire to speak more fluently with my host family is what helps me learn English.  I go shopping with my host family after school; and visit many places, such as the Rideau Canal and the Canadian Museum of History.  Rideau Canal becomes frozen in winter, so we can skate.  Some local people use as a means of transportation for work or university.  Rideau Canal is a world heritage site.  In the Canadian Museum of History, we saw POW WOW with Canadian indigenous dancers and drums.  There are discoveries every day.  I have spent a new full life!

〔学校での生活〕

　　私は学校ではHospitality and Tourism Technologies, Mathematics, English, Visual Artsの授業をとっています。どの授業でも自分の知らない単語がたくさん出てくるので電子辞書は私の必需品になっています。毎日授業毎に理解できなかった部分を探し、授業前後に必ず先生に質問するようにしています。
また、昼食はいつもカフェテリアで食べていますがお昼休みは外出が可能なのでレストランで昼食をとることもあります。お友達が誕生日の日にみんなでレストランに行き、私はカナダ名物料理のPoutineを食べました。一日一日が大切で思い出になっています。

　うまく伝わらないもどかしさや相手の言っていることが理解しきれず落ち込む日も多いですが、これからもめげずに努力を欠かさず自分自身が成長できるように頑張りたいと思います。そして今の自分があるのは応援してくれている家族や友達、現地の人々との出会いがあってこそだということを忘れずに過ごしていきたいです。

I take Hospitality and Tourism Technologies, Mathematics, English, and Visual Arts classes in my school.
My electronic dictionary is necessary because I find many words I don’t know in every class.  I have tried to find the parts I don’t understand in every class.  If I have some questions, I ask my teacher after or before class.  Also, I usually have lunch at the cafeteria.  But we can go outside during lunchtime, so I occasionally have lunch at a restaurant nearby.  Lately, I went to the restaurant on my friend’s birthday.  I ate Poutine then.  Poutine is Canadian traditional food.  Each day is precious and memorable.

It is frustrating when I cannot express myself in English and also when I cannot understand what people say completely. So, there are many days when I feel down.
Even so, I don’t give up and I want myself to grow.  I would like to spend my time without forgetting that I am who I am today thanks to my family, friends, and local people who support me.
