アイルランドに来て約1か月と1週間が経ちました。
　日々の生活にはもう慣れてきて、充実した日々を過ごしています。

It has been about a month and a week since I arrived in Ireland.
I have already gotten used to daily life and I am living fulfilling days.

〔日常生活〕

　アイルランドは北半球の中でも北にある国なのでとても寒いと思っていたのですが、0度を下回ることはなく耐えられる寒さで、一度カフェの外で半袖でコーヒーを飲んでいる人まで見かけました。アイルランドに来たのは１月5日で、そのころは16時半には日が落ちていましたが今は18時になっても明るく、季節の変化が早いです。しかし朝登校する時間帯はまだ暗いです。

　学校のある日は毎朝、バスに乗って学校に行きます。バス停ではバスが来たときに手を上げ運転手に合図をして乗せてもらいます。しかしアイルランドのバスは時間通りには絶対に来ず、そのうえ知らないうちに運休になっていたり満員で乗せてくれなかったりということが頻繁にあり、徒歩だと1時間半以上かかってしまい、バスが必須なのでとても大変です。アイルランドの人達はバスに乗る時、日本の満員電車の様に力を使って奥に詰めることはせず隙間があっても満員だと運転手が判断すると”Sorry, Bus full….”とバスに表示され、バス停で待っていて手を挙げてもそのまま通り過ぎて乗せてくれないです。ですが今はそんな悪夢のようなバスにも慣れ、どのバス停で多くの人が降りるのかも分かってきたので、そのバス停まで歩いてから乗ることが多いです。乗れた時はいつも本当に嬉しいです。

　アイルランド人の英語の訛りは人にもよりますがとても強く、まるで頑張って舌を使わずに話し、語尾の発音を全部省略して話しているかのようで聞き取りにくく、しかもとても速いのでたまに何を言っているのかがわからない時もあります。しかしアイルランド人はとてもフレンドリーで大らかな印象で感じの良い人が多いと感じています。

Daily life

I thought Ireland would be very cold as it is located in the northern part of the hemisphere, but it has been bearably cold, and not getting below 0 degrees Celsius. I even saw a person drinking coffee outside a cafe in short sleeves once. I arrived in Ireland on January 5, and at that time the sun was going down at 16:30, but now it is still bright at 18:00, and the seasons are changing quickly. However, it is still dark when I go to school in the morning.
On school days, I take the bus to school every morning. At the bus stop, I raise my hand when the bus arrives and the driver lets me on.
However, the buses in Ireland never come on time, and often they are canceled without notice, or when they are full and do not let us get on. When people in Ireland get on a bus, they do not use their power to squeeze into the back of the bus, like a packed train in Japan. But if the driver thinks the bus is full even if there is some space, the driver will display the message “Sorry, Bus full....” on the bus. Even if I wait at the bus stop and raise my hand, the bus will pass by and won't let us on. I have gotten used to this nightmare, and I have learned which bus stop most people get off at, so I often walk to that stop before getting on the bus. I am always really happy when I can get on.
The accent of Irish people is very strong, depending on the person but it is hard to understand them, as if they are trying their best to speak without using their tongue and skipping the pronunciation of the end of every word. However, I have the impression that Irish people are very friendly and generous, and many of them are very nice.

〔学校生活〕

　私が通っているMount Secondary School というダブリンにある学校はカトリックの学校なので毎朝朝礼の最後にお祈りをしています。
　私がアイルランドに来てから一番大変だと思っているのは友達を作ることや人間関係です。はじめ学校に来たときは歓迎されているように感じながらも自分から話しかけない限りあまり仲良くなれないことに気が付いたので、たまにタイミングを伺いすぎて話しかけられない時もあるのですが、声を掛けると皆笑顔で話してくれるのでとても嬉しいし気持ちが良いです。微笑むことの大切さと良さを初めて知り、実感しました。また、アイルランドだからなのかはわかりませんが、初めて自分と同じ趣味や好きな音楽や興味や考えを持った同年代の人に出会い、しかも数人いて、日本では感じたことのない居心地の良さを感じています。

　授業は数学と英語と体育の必須科目以外の選択科目では日本では学んだことのないものをやってみたかったので、ビジネス、DCG(建築デザインの様な立体図形)、西洋古典文学(古代ギリシア語・ラテン語の作品を学ぶ)、物理の授業を選択しました。ビジネスや西洋古典文学では日本語でもわからない単語が山のように出てきてテストで筆記があることが分かった時は不安でしたが授業をいつも全集中で聞き、内容を比較的理解し覚えていたので思っていたより書くことができました。
　部活はオーケストラとバドミントンに入っています。どちらも週に一回なのですがオーケストラの練習は朝７時30分からで早く少し大変ですが、色んな人と出会え、勉強以外のアクティビティが出来てとても楽しいです。

School Life

My school, Mount Secondary School in Dublin, is a Catholic school, so we pray every morning at the end of the morning assembly.
The most difficult thing for me since I joined school is making friends. When I first came to school, I felt welcomed but I realized that I couldn't make friends unless I spoke to them myself. Sometimes I am too busy looking for the right moment to speak to them, but when I do, they all talk to me with a smile, which makes me very happy and pleasant to talk to. It was the first time I learned and realized how important and good it is to smile. Also, I don't know if it is because I am in Ireland, but for the first time I met people around my age who have the same hobbies, interests, and thoughts as me, and there are several of them, and I feel a feeling of comfort that I have never felt in Japan.

I wanted to try something I had never studied in Japan, so I chose business, DCG (three-dimensional graphics like architectural design), classical literature (study of ancient Greek and Latin works), and physics classes. In Business and Classical literature, there are a lot of words that I don't understand even in Japanese, and I was worried when I found out that there was a writing test. However, I could write better than I expected because I always listened to the class with full concentration and
understood and remembered the content relatively well.
I joined the orchestra and badminton clubs, both of which are held once a week. Orchestra practice starts at 7:30 a.m., which is a bit early and hard to do, but it is good because I can meet different people and do activities other than studying.

〔ホームステイ〕

私の今のホームステイ先では、初めて来た時にホストマザーが「私はアイルランドのマザーだから何でも言ってね」と言ってくれたのでとても安心しました。ご飯はポテトがたくさん使われていて、とても美味しいです。ホストファミリーとどこかに観光に行くことはあまりないですが、アイルランドのおすすめの場所や犯罪被害者にならない為に気をつけることなどをたくさん教えてくれて、自分達で様々な場所に行っているので自己マネージメント力も高まっていると思いますし、楽しいし面白いです。

ほぼ毎日英語で日記を書いているのですが、” I wanted to …”や”I tried to…”の後に”but I couldn’t “が続く文章が多いことに気がついたので、後悔のないように勇気を持って行動できるように努め、残りの約1ヶ月半も充実した日々になるように頑張ります。

Homestay

When I first arrived at my host family, my host mother said to me, “I am an Irish mother, so you can ask me anything”, which made me feel safe. The food is very tasty and they use a lot of potatoes. They teach me a lot about recommended places in Ireland and things to watch out for to avoid becoming a victim of crime, etc. I think my self-management skills are improving because we go to various places on our own, and it is fun and interesting.

I write a diary in English almost every day, but, after “I wanted to ...” or “I tried to ...” I noticed that many sentences are followed by “but I couldn't.” So I will try to be courageous so that I will have no regrets, and I will do my best to make the remaining about 1.5 months of my days as fulfilling as possible.
