ごきげんよう。私はカナダのオタワに留学しています。
　海外に行ったことがないどころか、飛行機に乗ったこともない私にとって今回のターム留学は初体験に溢れています。

I have been studying in Ottawa, Canada.  I have never been overseas or been on a plane, so this time I had many first-time experiences.

〔日常生活〕

　日本での登下校といえば徒歩や電車、自転車などが主流です。しかしカナダではスクールバスや車での送迎が主流です。そして何より困惑するのは他の学校も同じ見た目のバスであることに加え、日本のように行先が提示されているわけではなく、手書きで書かれた四桁の番号が書いてある紙を窓に貼っているだけなので判別がとても困難なことです。また、授業後にホームルームなどはないので授業が終了次第急いでロッカーに向かい、準備を済ませなければバスを逃してしまいます。ただ、運良く私のロッカーは出口・バスロータリーに近いので問題なく帰宅できています。

In Japan, we walk to school; or go to school by train or bicycle.  However, in Canada, what confused me was that the other school buses looked the same, and there was no destination display like in Japan; just a piece of paper with a 4-digit number stuck on the window.  Also, there is no homeroom after class, and as soon as class is over, all the students rush to their lockers, get ready to go home, and head to the bus.  If they don't do this, they'll miss the bus.  Fortunately, my locker is close to the exit and bus rotary, so I don’t have any problems.

〔ホストファミリー〕

　私のホームステイ先にはホストマザー、ファザー、１歳と２歳のブラザー、スペインから来た留学生の女の子がいます。マザーとファザーは料理がとても上手で晩ご飯にリブステーキやマッシュポテトなどとても豪華でおいしい食事を作ってくれます。元から年下が得意ではなかった私は１歳と２歳にもみくちゃにされながら頑張って生活しています。
　スペインの子は同じ学校に通っているので毎日一緒に登下校をしています。使わない長袖の制服をくれたり、一緒にホッケーの試合に行ったり、誕生日プレゼントを買ってくれたりと親切にしてくれます。
私がカナダに到着してからホストファミリーが歓迎パーティ、次の日には誕生日パーティを開いてくれました。また、隣の家とホストファミリーの仲が良いので隣の家族も誘って大人数のパーティとなり、とても賑やかで楽しかったです。基本的に大人、10代、赤ちゃんの3組に分かれてそれぞれが楽しんでいます。私はいつも10代の４人でボードゲームをします。日本にはないゲームも遊ぶことができてとても楽しいです。

My host family consists of a host mother, a host father, host brothers (1 and 2 years old), and international student girl from Spain.  My host mother and host father are good cooks.  I’m not good at interacting with younger people, but I’m trying my best.  The Spanish exchange student and I go to the same school, so I commute to school with her every day.  She has been kind to me by giving me a school uniform, going to hockey games with me, and buying me birthday presents.  When I arrived in Canada, my host family held a welcome party and a birthday party for me.  Also, my host family and the family next door are very close, so we invited the family next door as well, having a large party that was very lively and fun.  Basically, we are always split into three groups: adults, teenagers, and babies, and everyone seems to be having fun. I always enjoy playing board games with teenagers.  It’s fun to play games that aren’t available in Japan.

〔学校生活〕

　私の通う学校は留学生があまり珍しくなく、自ら話しかけていかないと孤立してしまいます。「次の授業では話しかける」、「明日こそは話しかける」と思っていても、なかなか勇気が出ないのが現実でした。 second semesterが始まるまでの約2週間ではなかなか友達ができませんでした。しかし、second semesterが始まり心を入れ替えて勇気を出したことにより友達を作ることができました!

International students are not so rare at my school, and I had to talk to them myself.  It was difficult for me to make friends in the two weeks before the start of the second semester.  However, when the second semester started, I changed my attitude and gathered up my courage, and I could make friends!

地域の小学校にて日本文化の紹介をするボランティア活動をしました。

〔最後に〕

　約1か月間カナダで過ごしてみて、学んだことは英語だけではありません。家事力、雪道の歩き方、－15℃への耐性などの様々な生活力が上がりました。日本では経験できないことを毎日たくさん経験しています。残りの約２か月間も日本ではできないたくさんの経験を積んでいきたいと思います。

Spending about a month in Canada, I learned not just English.  I've improved my daily life skills, such as housekeeping, and walking on snowy roads, and I have gained tolerance to temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees. I have experienced many things every day that I can't experience in Japan.  I'd like to continue to gain more experiences that I can't have in Japan for the remaining two months.
