Good day to you! My name is S.K, and I am studying abroad in San Diego, USA. It has been almost three weeks since I started studying abroad. My life in the U.S. is very enjoyable as I discover something new every day.

First of all, I would like to talk about homestay. This was my first homestay in my life. When I arrived in the U.S., I was more nervous than excited. However, my host family was very kind, which made me feel at ease. I thought the homestay was a very valuable experience because I could learn about American culture and the beauty of Japan through the homestay. I knew before I came to Japan that I should take a shower within 5 minutes and that the food is very simple, but when I actually experienced it, I realized that Japan is a very luxurious country. At the same time, I felt very grateful that I was able to have this experience at the age of 16. Also, my host family is Mexican, so Spanish is their first language. I still can't get used to the Spanish accent in English, but I think this is because I am studying in San Diego, which is close to the Mexican border, so I was able to experience this.

Next, I would like to talk about school life. I attend a school with about 2,300 students. American schools are very different from Japanese schools. America is a multi-ethnic country, so there are many ethnic groups such as Filipinos, Europeans, Asians, etc. The atmosphere of the school is like being in a foreign drama. Students do not have their own classrooms and leave the classroom as soon as the bell rings to end class. Almost every day we have a piece of pizza for lunch, which we eat while standing outside. Americans are energetic all day long. Unlike in Japan, they are free to wear whatever they want, and they are allowed to use their phones and eat snacks during class. I really like the American atmosphere where you are not restricted by anything. In the U.S., each international student is assigned a buddy, and I felt that my buddy really helped me out. My English was not very good and I could not speak it fluently, but they tried their best to understand me even though my English was not very good. I realized that even if I couldn't speak English, it was important to try to communicate and make others feel it. I was able to expand my conversation because there are many people who like Japanese music, anime, Western music, and K-POP, even if they are not my buddies. In the U.S., if you don't speak up, you won't be taken seriously, so I learned that it is important to speak up and share your thoughts and opinions with others, rather than just being passive like in Japan. I spend very fulfilling days with my buddies after school, going shopping and watching basketball games. The teaching style is also very different from Japan. As is well known, American classes are participatory. In some classes, the teacher asks questions and everyone thinks about them, while in other classes, students work on their own assignments. Everyone is very active in class and speaks up a lot, and no one is sleeping. The class I enjoyed the most in the U.S. was the business class. In that class, we played business games together. I was able to learn how business works while having fun through the game.

I still have about a month and a half left in my life as an exchange student, so I will continue to have various experiences that I cannot have in Japan.
