高校２年生(34期生)

高校２年のS.H．です。私はカナダのオタワに留学しています。カナダの冬は厳しく、平均でも氷点下、寒いときは－30℃近くまで下がります。また、見渡すと一面が雪なので思う存分雪を楽しめます。公用語も2言語で、移民の受け入れが多い国なので多様性を感じることができます。

カナダに来て驚いたことは、バスでのことです。連結バスや2階建てバスは運転手が後方まで見えず、自分が降りたいバス停で降りられないことがあるので、皆降りたいところの１～２つ前にドア前で待機しています。

私のホームステイ先はホストマザー、ホストシスターが2人（大学生と小学生）います。

ホストマザーは英語以外にもフランス語を話せるユーモアのある人です。先生をしながら、他にも２つのビジネスをこなしています。大学生のホストシスターは大学に行きながら、誕生日や卒業式などに依頼した家や学校を訪れ、段ボールで作った切文字やイラストを設置しに行くというビジネス（通称サイン）をしています。もう１人のホストシスターは、芸術系が上手で毎日ピアノを弾いたり、絵を描いたりしています。日本のアニメが好きで、アニメについて話したりしました。私がオタワに到着した日に玄関先にサインがあったり、家の中に上がると、ピアノを弾いてくれたり歓迎が温かくとても嬉しかったです。

ホストファミリーとはショッピングや映画を見たり、折り紙をしたり、日本食を作ったりして過ごしています。

学校はSt. Mother Teresa high schoolという学校に通っています。ここは留学生（特に日本、中国、ベトナム、イラクから）が多いため、驚かれたりすることはほとんどありません。授業は日本よりもディスカッションが多く、発言するということが当たり前で、皆が話しやすい雰囲気の授業がなされています。正直、まだ先生や生徒の話すスピードが速く、もちろんスライドも英語なので理解するのがやっとで、なかなか追いつくことはできませんが、私の中でできることを最大限し、授業に取り組んでいます。

周りの生徒や先生はとても親切で、分からないことを質問したら丁寧に答えてくれます。私が1番好きなHealth for Lifeという教科で、フットボールをしたとき、ハイタッチをしたり、褒めあったりとスポーツを通して仲良くなれたことがとても嬉しかったです。

また、ランチの時間はカフェテリアで食べている人がほとんどですが、廊下で地べたに座って食べている人もよく見かけるのでとても驚きました。ランチは自分で作って持っていかなければいけないので、今まで母親に任せていた私には苦難の日々が続いています。

この2週間程は尋ねられた時に何度も聞き返す、また、とっさに英文を作って話すのが大変で短文で返してしまい、上手くいかないことばかりで葛藤を繰り返していました。残りの1ヶ月半弱は多くの方達との関わり、自主学習から英語を上達させ、日本では体験できない新たな発見をしていきたいです。また、お世話になっているホストファミリーに感謝を言動・行動で伝えたり、様々な日本食を作ったり、日本からのお土産で会話を膨らませながら文化の相互理解をしていきたいです。

I’m in Ottawa, Canada to study abroad. Even the average temperature is below freezing, and when it's so cold, it drops to nearly -30℃. Also, we can enjoy the snow, because many landscapes covered with snow. This country has two official languages and accepts a large immigrant population, so we can feel diversity.

What surprised thing in Canada was on the buses. There are connection buses and double decker buses, drivers can’t see behind them and sometimes we can’t get off at the bus stop we want to get off at. So, almost people wait near the door one or two stops before where they want to get off.

My host family consists host mother and two host sisters.

Host mother is a humor and she can speak French as well as English. She works as a teacher and runs two other businesses. One of my host sisters who is a university student runs business that she visits to houses and schools which request her and sets up cut-out letters and illustrations made by cardboards(commonly known as sign). Another host sister is an elementary school student and she is good at arts as playing the piano every day and drawing some pictures. Also, she likes Japanese animations, so we talked about them. The day when I arrived at Ottawa, there were signs in front of house, and she played the piano for me and their welcome was warm, so I was really happy.

We spend our time with shopping, watching movies, playing with Origami, or making Japanese foods.

I go to St. Mother Teresa High School, which has many international students, especially from Japan, China, Vietnam, and Iraq, so we are rarely surprised. In class, there are more discussions than in Japan, and speaking up is the norm, and the classes are conducted in an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable to talk. It’s still difficult for me to catch up with teachers and students because they speak so fast and of course the slides are in English, but I’m doing my best and working on classes.

Teachers and students surround me are so kind that they answer politely if I ask for them. When we played football in Health for Life class which is my favorite subject, we became through sports, high-fiving and praising each other.

In addition, almost students eat lunch at cafeteria, but I also often see people sitting in the hallways. I have to make a lunch by myself, but it’s so hard because I had been left it to my mother.

For the past two weeks, when someone ask me, I listen back, also it’s difficult to make sentences quickly, so I’ve responded with short one. From now on, I would like to improve my English skills by interacting with many people, or studying om my own, and discovery a lot of new things, that I can’t experience in Japan. I would also like to understand each culture by cooking Japanese foods, and giving gifts. And, of course, I’ll never forget to thank.
