 Hamilton Girls’ High School

Hi! I’m Mizutani. I’ve attended Hamilton Girls’ High School for a month. Though I’m busy doing my homework and looking up new words, I’ve had a very full life.

I had stayed in Auckland and got training with Japanese students for a week when I went to Hamilton. My host family took us to various places where I can know cultures and beautiful scenery everyday so that we could have a very full time. I was worried about living with people who speaks different language and has different cultures because this is the first time, I’ve been on a homestay visit. However, I began to stay, I could have a good time like a real family.

Though New Zealand is automobile society and most New Zealanders use cars and bike, people who rides a scooter is about as same as people who uses bike. Japanese often use scooter as a toy, but New Zealander often use it as a means of transportation. We can use scooter which is put somewhere casually in the city through the application software. New Zealander talk to salesperson and passerby in a friendly way and exchange greetings with the drivers when they get on the bus. I think these are nice cultures. My host family in Hamilton has many relatives and people who I first meet come talking or staying overnight every few weeks. Maybe this is not common, but I’m very happy to spend in a favorable environment.

私は何回かクラスを変え、今取っているクラスはEarly Childhood Education(幼児教育)English Second Language(英語が母語でない生徒だけでの授業)History(year11)Japanese(year11)MathematicsPhysicsです。

My school has students from year9 to year13 and I’m year12. Same year’s students are not always same age. The timetable is drawn up every 2 weeks, and 1 period is 60 minutes long. We have 5 classes in a day (4 classes on Tuesday). We don’t have a morning or evening assembly. Tutor class which is between 2 period and interval is like homeroom class in Japan. Teachers are always on time to finish classes, but the beginning of a class is always late. My school has a ground which is very wide, so I’ve got lost several times and I’ve got a lot of from my friends. We can choose 6 classes and we can change our classes. I’ve changed classes a couple of times and I take Early Childhood Education, English Second Language, History, Japanese, Mathematics, and Physics. All classes are different atmosphere and I can’t know about the class unless I try to take it. Compared with Japan, I think we often solve a problem together every classes. It was difficult to join in the conversation for me, but I made new friends each of classes.

After I came here, I can lead a full life because there are so many new things to discover for me.

However, I reflected on what I did like counting on people too much. As I have just one month to improve my stay, I’m going to make efforts to have more talk with people and I’d like to come back to Japan with confidence.
