高校１年生(32期生)　　ニュージーランド留学

　 Kia Ora！I’m Kako Koeda, studying in New Zealand.  As Five weeks have passed since I arrived here, there are still many things I don’t get used to. However, every day this studying abroad seems to improve me better.

   Now, let me introduce the weather in New Zealand.  The weather here is really changing easily.  Just before sunrise, it is so cold outside that I can’t stay long without a long shirt.  The higher the sun rises, the higher the temperature goes up.  In the afternoon, we get a strong sunshine, but it is so dry that we don’t feel hot like summer in Japan.  It seldom rains here.

 ごきげんよう。ニュージーランドに留学中の小枝です。こちらに来て5週間が経ちましたが、いまだに慣れないことだらけの日々です。ですが、毎日たくさんの発見があり、こちらに来て本当に良かったと毎日感じています。

ここでニュージーランドの気候について紹介したいと思います。結論から言うと、とにかく天気が変わりやすく、朝と昼の気温差が激しいです。特に日の出前は長袖を着て過ごすほど肌寒いです。空気がとても乾燥しているので、日本のような蒸し暑さは感じませんが、日差しがもの凄く強いです。雨が降ることは稀でほとんどの日が晴れです。

 

　 In the first week, I stayed in Auckland and learned a lot about New Zealand such as Maori culture and a lifestyle of Kiwi.  My host parents have 9 years and 3 years old boys.  As my host family’s friends and relatives visited our house every day, I think Kiwi people don’t feel it uncomfortable that their friends or relative suddenly visit them.

　最初の一週間はオークランドでペアステイをしながら、コミュニティスクールでマオリの文化や現地の人のライフスタイルを学びました。私のホストファミリーには９歳と３歳の兄弟がいました。毎日、友達や親戚が遊びに来ていて、ニュージーランドの人はとてもオープンだなと感じました。

　

 My host family took us to various places.  The picture above is when we walked in the forest, where it was only 20 minutes away from our house.  Staying in Auckland was so interesting that I appreciate my host family and staff.

　ホストファミリーは毎日のように様々な場所に連れて行ってくれました。上の写真は家から車で20分の距離にある森を散策した時のものです。オークランドでの研修は毎日楽しく過ごすことができ、ホストファミリーやスタッフの方への感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

 

    After one-week stay in Auckland, we moved to Hamilton to enter a local school.  Now I go to Hamilton Girls’ High School every day.  

I joined Year 12.  This school has seventeen-hundred students, which is almost twice as large as Otsumatama.  This school respects Maori culture, so we sing the school song both in English and in Maori.  The teachers and the students speak both languages in the beginning of each assembly.  We pray in Maori’s way too.  What I was impressed the most is that teachers did Maori greeting as putting the tip of each nose together in the entrance ceremony.  The building in the picture is a classroom where students study the Maori language.

  オークランドでの研修が終わり、私は現地校があるハミルトンという都市に移動しました。現在 はハミルトンガールズハイスクールにYear 12として通っています。生徒数はおよそ1700人で大妻多摩の約２倍の人数です。この学校はマオリの文化を大事にしていて校歌は英語とマオリ語で歌い、集会では先生や生徒がマオリ語で挨拶をします。また、マオリ式でお祈りもします。一番驚いたことは入学式の最後に先生方が鼻と鼻をくっつけて行うマオリの挨拶をしていたことです。写真の中の建物はマオリ語の授業が行われる場所です。

 

   In school, there are more international students than I thought.  Most of them are studying longer or live here.  The students who study a short term like me is a minority.  The teachers and the students don’t know who the new international students are.  Therefore, it’s important to tell, “I’m a new student” and get information.

　学校には想像以上に国際生が在籍していて、そのほとんどが長期留学、あるいはここに移住してきた生徒たちです。つまり、私のような短期留学生はごく少数です。先生方や生徒も誰が新国際生なのかを把握していないので、とにかくアピールをしていろんなことを教えてもらうことが大切です。

 

  Next, I’ll introduce my subjects.  We can choose six subjects freely.  Finally, I changed my timetable five times.  Now I take math, physics, business, social study (year 11), drama (year 11), TRR (English for international students).  Since I changed so many times, the teachers were worried about me.  Now I can take classes which matched me, so I find the importance to tell others my feelings.  Each class is in different places, so I lost my way in the first week.

　次に教科選択についてお話したいと思います。必須科目がなかったため、自由に６教科選ぶことができました。結局、５回時間割を変えましたが、今は自分にとってベストな時間割を組めているので、我慢しないで先生に伝えてよかったと心から思っています。ちなみに私は数学、物理、ビジネス、ソーシャルスタディ（Year11）、ドラマ（Year 11）、TRR（留学生用の英語）を取っています。それぞれの授業が異なる教室で行われるので移動が大変で、最初は迷子になりました。

 

   Students in New Zealand are positive and ask many questions.  After teachers’ speaking, some students usually ask teachers to check their mistakes.  I like this atmosphere.  Everyone is afraid of keeping quiet rather than making mistakes, so there is always big discussion in classes.  In the beginning, I couldn’t ask the teachers because I used to think it’s a shame to show I don’t understand, but now I raise my hand and ask many questions of the teachers especially, in physics.

　ニュージーランドの生徒は質問することにとても意欲的です。先生が話し終わったら、たいてい誰かが先生に質問を投げかけます。私はこの雰囲気がとても気に入っています。皆、間違えることよりも疑問点を放置することの方が嫌いで、クラスはいつも生徒の声で溢れています。最初の頃は恥ずかしくて出来ませんでしたが、今では毎回どんどん手を挙げて疑問点を無くすようにしています。

 

   In drama, and business classes, we very often discuss what we like to play or share own ideas. We don’t need notebooks or textbooks.  Taking these classes, I always feel difficulty speaking in English, very different from writing or reading in English.  I can’t afford to care about grammar.  I’ve found the importance of thinking of ideas instantly in conversation.  However, I think it’s a good choice for me.  On Feb 28, I had an activity outside school all day in business class.  About 10 schools gathered in a hall and we discussed what we wanted to solve by producing products with business experts.  It was fresh for me.  After that we went to the shopping center to learn about marketing in each group.

　ドラマとビジネスのクラスでは、ほとんどがグループごとの話し合いで、何を表現したいか、または自分たちの考えをグループで共有することに重点が置かれています。この２つの授業を受けていると、つくづく英語で話すことの難しさを感じます。読んだり，書いたりするのとは全く異なります。英語を話すときは文法を気にする余裕がないため、自然と文が思い浮かぶことが大切だということを身に染みて感じています。同時にこの２つのクラスを選択して良かったと思っています。2月28日にはビジネスの課外授業があり、10校が集まってビジネスの専門家の方と一緒に商品を生み出すことで、どんな問題を解決したいかについて議論しました。午後にはショッピングセンターへ行き、グループごとにお店をまわり、マーケティングについての理解を深めました。今まで経験したことのないことばかりでとても新鮮でした。

 

   Not only these two classes but also the other classes here are very different and unique and the ways to learn is various.  Only writing in notebooks is not learning.  In addition to these, school itself is so fantastic. We have a lot of choice for committees and clubs.  Now I play football, tennis (lunch time) and basketball.  In March, as more clubs will start, I’m going to join other clubs.

この２つの授業に限らずここにはたくさんのユニークで面白い授業がたくさんあります。ここは学ぶということへの捉え方がとても広いです。また、学校自体がとてもユニークで、委員会やクラブも自由参加で、日本にないクラブもたくさんあります。私は今フットサル、テニス（ランチタイム）、バスケットボールをやっています。３月から新たなクラブも始まるのでスポーツ以外のクラブにも参加予定です。

 

 

   On Feb 19, we had Athletic Day.　It’s like Sports Day.  Five houses competed with one another by points.  I belong to Wilson, whose color is yellow.  This photo is when we were marching in each house.  There were personal matches and house competitions. Personal matches are for students who like sports, and house competitions are for every student.  Some students wore fancy costumes.  We sang Wilson’s song against the other houses in each event.  Surprisingly, my house won the first prize.

　２月19日にアスレチック・デイがありました。日本でいう体育祭のようなもので、５つのハウスが得点を求めて競い合います。ちなみに私はハウスカラーが黄色のWilsonに所属しています。この写真はハウスごとに行進をした時のものです。個人種目とハウスイベントがあり、前者はスポーツが好きな生徒向けで、後者は皆が自由に参加できます。生徒の中には仮装している人がたくさんいました。ハウスイベントごとに他のハウスに対抗して、Wilsonの歌を歌ったりしました。驚いたことに、私たちのハウスが優勝しました。

 

Lastly, I’ll introduce my host family in Hamilton.  My host parents take turns working while taking care of three sons.  My host mother works in the day and father works at night. They’re so hard-workers.  My host brothers are 8 years old, 4years old and 10 months.  The older brother is so independent that he takes care of his younger brothers.  Since I was taken care of by my parents, I came to realize again how much gratitude my parents and my older brother deserved.  My host family is so active: my host father’s hobby is fishing, and we often eat fish.  I also went fishing in a lake and picked fruits with them.　I am thankful to them because my stay is full of happiness.

　最後にわたしの2軒目のホストファミリーを紹介します。ホストペアレンツは3人の息子さんを育てながら、交代で働いています。マザーは朝早くに家を出て働き、夕方にファザーと交代をし、ファザーは夜中に帰ってきます。二人ともとてもハードな毎日を送っています。ホストブラザーは８歳，4歳そして10か月の赤ちゃんです。一番上の子はとてもしっかりしているので、他の兄弟の面倒をよく見ています。ここに来てから改めて、両親や兄の偉大さを感じています。ファミリーはとてもアクティブで、ファザーの趣味が釣りなのでよくお魚を食べています。また、釣りをしに行くためにビーチや、湖やフルーツ狩りにも連れて行ってもらいました。私の生活は幸せで、ファミリーにはとても感謝しています。

 

  I have only one month left here.  I’ll make the most of my stay with gratitude to many people supporting me.  Thank you for reading.
